Dubai 2040: Urban Master Plan
In March 2021 a comprehensive plan that lays out the future of Dubai’s sustainable urban development was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashed, the Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. The aim of which is to transform the emirate and create a truly inter connected, people led city that balances community with tourism, and modernity with heritage and nature. Over the next two decades, Dubai’s population is expected to almost double from 3.3 million to 5.8 million and this new plan aims to establish Dubai as the best city in the world to live in.
The Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan is the seventh of its kind to be implemented since 1960, and it focuses on using space within the current city and concentrates development in existing urban areas. These are the main highlights.
- Five main areas to be developed
- Designated spaces for education and health to increase by 25%
- Areas for hotels and tourism to expand 134%
- 60% of Dubai to comprise of nature reserves and natural areas
- 55% of population to live within 800 meters of public transport station
Under the plan, development and investment will be focused on five main urban areas, each with their own theme that supports economic growth, increased job opportunities and will provide lifestyle facilities that cater to the needs of all sections of the population. Ultimately, the plan seeks to raise the quality of life within the city while increasing densities around mass transit station.
